Vaccine Information: What You Need to Know
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months and older get the updated Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, regardless of any previous COVID-19 vaccinations.
The updated vaccines were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Sept. 11 and recommended by the CDC on Sept. 12. The newly formulated COVID-19 vaccines target a more recent variant of the virus than earlier vaccines. This vaccine will be available in UCLA Health clinics soon.
The CDC outlines how to stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines by age group.
- Everyone 6 and older should get one updated Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
- People 65 and older can get one additional dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 or more months after receiving the first dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccination.
- People who are moderately to severely immunocompromised may get one extra dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccination two months or more after receiving the previous dose. Speak with your doctor about any extra updated dosages.
- Children ages 6 months to 4 years who have never been vaccinated against COVID-19 may receive three doses of the updated Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine over a period of time. Children ages 6 months to 5 years who have never been vaccinated against COVID-19 may receive two doses of the updated Moderna vaccine. Additional details are listed on the CDC website.
